Schwarze Kinderbibliothek

Schwarze Kinderbibliothek

Schwarze Kinderbibliothek (The Black Children's Library) in Bremen is the first children's library in Germany that focuses on Black children and young people as heroes and main characters in stories and books. Our children's and young people's books are a careful selection of diversity-conscious children's and young people's literature, which is intended to empower readers and foster sensibility to a wide variety of realities and everyday worlds.

Black children and children of color are still greatly underrepresented as protagonists of stories in German-language literature, as many of these books emerge from a predominantly white and Eurocentric worldview. With our children's and young people's books in German and English, the project sees itself as a supplement to common stories and wants to use its books to convey diverse and sensitive depictions of life as normal. In addition to the children's and youth books from 0 to 14 years, there is also a small selection of adult literature. Here you will find specialist books on the topics of anti-racism, decolonization and empowerment, as well as novels and volumes of poetry by black authors.

In this way, the project also guarantees an increased representation of black writers according to the so-called "Own Voice" approach. It is possible to browse through the books on site and borrow them. Our offer is meant to be as accessible as possible. Therefore, no library card is required for borrowing and there are no rental fees. The offer is completely free.
