Sending the Text: Community-building with Mail-art Periodicals

Modern communication is disastrous. Algorithmically linked to the pockets of oligarchs, hyper-immediate, wrecking the social nervous-system. Can small press publishers reach out to their audiences through less stressful means: the traditional system of postal mail? Lauria from Pseudo Press and Rachel from Taxonomy Press will lead a discussion on the benefits and possibilities of publishing periodical or subscription mailers, the joys of slow communication and the community it nurtures.

Lauria & Rachel will introduce the group to their own mail publication series (the Pseudo Press Snail Mail Newsletter and the Taxonomy Press Floral Observer) and other small press mailer periodicals, exploring the boundaries of letters-as-books, making an envelope exciting to open, and why regularity matters!

If participants want, they can bring a piece of mail that they've received which brought them joy, so we can analyze and reconstruct what possible intimacies exist for mail publications.
