Risoforum

Risoforum
talk main stage

RISOFORUM is a discourse day around risography as one particular, famously infamous tool of self-publishing and DIY printing hosted by Hamburg based collective Risofort, interested in furthering the debate around the funky stencil copiers and broaden our own understanding of what the risography community does, shares, and disputes, and invite everyone to spend a morning together on that matter.

In allusion to this year's motto "Where do we go from here?" we want to establish risography both as an evergreen trend and a doomed endeavor to begin with. The question perhaps also begs answers to "How did we end up here"?

We have compiled a program of 7 speakers who will shine a light on the scene ("the scene"?) from different perspectives, including theory-informed commentary on its state and potential, as well as accounts of hands-on morphed Riso practices such as mixed media paintings, animation, and stickers, and glimpses into studio practices beyond a glossed up facade.

Talks and discussions

  • “È peggio di quanto pensassi” (“It's worse than I thought”) by Atelier Tatanka

A brief presentation of Atelier Tatanka and a general reflection on self-production, sustainability and the role of the Risograph medium in the practices of a graphic design studio.

  • Hocus Bogus or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Riso Animation by Hocus Bogus

In 2023 artist Dennis Muñoz Espadiña started to experiment with animating printed Riso sheets. This presentation shows the trails and tribulations of wanting to create an animated short film with the use of a stencil duplicator.

  • Riso as tool to question time by ise

How do we print beyond normative time? A risograph practice shaped by Crip Theory — slow, layered, and collective. Printing becomes refusal. Rhythm becomes care. Time, a space to reimagine.

  • Ninja Machiya - The unbearable lightness of Risography by Melo Melo Print

Thomas Monses will speak about his ongoing photographic project “Ninja Machiya” and how he discovered Risography as a perfectly suited medium to reflect on urban life and development. He also shows how the medium of risography found its way into his painting and how he has developed a very unique mixed technique from it.

  • The Last Five Years of Risography in China by PrintHope

PRINTHOPE as a studio started in 2019. In the last five years, many friends from other Riso studios were made, we have all grown. With different purposes and speed, there are many different directions we have explored. Let's have a look on some of them to find out their particularities.

  • How Riso affected the renaissance of printed zines by Oficyna Peryferie

  • STICK(ER) IT TO THE MAN

A Radical Form of Publishing and the (re)claiming of public space by Matt Plezier and Moritz Grünke
