Newsletters as Alternative Social Networks
Once, social media felt like a radical tool for connection, community, and political discourse. In 2026, that notion no longer holds up in the face of surveillance capitalism, AI slop, and billionaire overlords dictating the terms of engagement. And even before the sale of Twitter to techno-fascist Elon Musk, many of us had already realized: we don't own our platforms, our feeds, our followers, or even our voices online.
But, what if we didn't have to rely on the whims of the algorithm? What if the most sustainable way to stay connected was something we already have: email?
In this workshop, we'll claim ownership our digital space by rethinking personal newsletters as decentralized social networks. Through writing and collage, we'll develop themes that align with our interests, values, and politics, explore accessible, free tools, and share contacts to kickstart our independent mailing lists. (Sharing contacts is voluntary, of course.)
Let's reclaim our connections!
Materials will be provided. Feel free to contribute old magazines and newspapers for collaging — or bring a pair of scissors or your fav writing tool.

Host: I'm Svenja, an independent communications designer and creative based in Berlin. Even if, as a millenial, I will forever have a nostalgic connection to publications predating the internet, I am a big believer in newsletters as a tool for creativity, community and connection.
