Four talks back to back in an hour:
A fresh view of sport in The Movement Movement
Ellie Jackson is editor-in-chief and creative director of The Movement Movement, a magazine that wants to change the way women’s sport is perceived. Inclusive and community-based, it proposes a broad understanding of what ’sports’ can entail, and while its pages champion the achievements of elite athletes, the magazine is just as interested in women who are finding their own way to move and get active. In this interview, Ellie will speak about her mission to expand the definition of women in sport, and her experiences publishing a new magazine.
Year Zero’s shifting mission
Bariş Bilenser is the man behind Istanbul-based publishing house Year Zero. In this conversation he will tell the story of how Year Zero started as a print magazine, then added an online radio station, and how it has more recently shifted to become a publisher of other people’s work, producing experimental and avant-garde titles like Nuts, Richard Turley’s ‘lookbook of ideas’, and Offal, the ‘literary sausage’ made from texts that couldn’t find a home elsewhere.
Backstage Talks and the power of quitting
Zuzana Kvetková is executive editor of Backstage Talks, the magazine that grew out of Bratislava’s By Design Conference. It was never a simple conference magazine, and over the years it has evolved, eventually outliving the conference altogether. After running for 10 years, this summer’s By Design Conference was the last one, but the magazine will continue, with a refreshed reason to exist. In this conversation Zuzana will look back at what they have done with the magazine so far, and share her thoughts on the opportunities ahead.
The changing face of Fukt
Bjørn Hegardt is editor-in-chief of Fukt, the magazine dedicated to the art and craft of drawing. The magazine is renowned for its clever and creative cover designs, which do a brilliant job of expressing the issue’s theme while also catching people’s eyes and luring them into the stories. In this conversation he will speak about how Fukt started and what they try to achieve with the magazine, sharing his thoughts on the themes they select and the different ways they go about exploring the often under-appreciated subject of drawing.
