Black Tones is a literary arts community for POC writers based in Ireland. We run monthly open-mics and workshops, as well as publishing our biennial zine Blue Bodies. Taken from the term 'Daoine gorm', Blue Bodies is a zine for the many faces and forms that shape Black-Irish identity. We are working to create an archive of Black-Irish writing and visual art.
COYOTE Media Collective was founded in 2025 by a team of longtime journalists in the Bay Area. Inspired by the alt-weeklies of yore, we envisioned an outlet that reflected the complexity and depth of the region we know and love. We serve readers who want to feel more connected to their communities, and who understand that a city’s greatest asset is the everyday people and families living here.
Elastic is a print magazine of psychedelic art, literature, and design. We publish work that bends time and genre and perspective, blurs waking and dreaming life, and otherwise breaks form to capture our twisted present. Our goal is to demonstrate that psychedelia is much more expansive and diverse a category than the narrow version of it that dominates the popular imagination.
Shineemo Banaadir is a Mogadishu-based cinema magazine founded in 2024 to revive and preserve Somalia’s cinematic heritage. Through research, essays, interviews, and visual archives, it documents lost cinema culture while fostering contemporary film discourse, reconnecting memory, identity, and storytelling within Somalia’s evolving cultural landscape.
Tehran Zine is an independent art-publishing platform and physical space in central Tehran, founded to build a zine culture in Iran. It focuses on zines and acts as a hub to help artists self-publish by sharing tools, knowledge, and infrastructure, while hosting workshops and connecting local practices to international networks.
VEHA is an independent publishing and digital archiving initiative dedicated to collecting and preserving the visual history of Belarus. At the core of our work is the production of research-based books, for which we conduct our own research and collaborate with artists and academics to critically engage with visual memory.
Shortlist
This is the shortlist for the Indiecon International Travel Grant 2026. It includes 50 excellent publishing projects (in alphabetical order) – and you should check out each and every one of them!
Why is this shortlist so long?
First of all, with more than 350 excellent applications from over 70 countries, the decision was incredibly difficult. Secondly, after the curatorial team has spent several intensive days reviewing all entries, we decided to publish a "long shortlist" to highlight at least some of the outstanding independent publishing projects that exist around the world. Thank you all for doing what you are doing – hope to see many of you in Hamburg.
What is this all about?
The Indiecon International Travel Grant is an opportunity for six independent publishers to exhibit and speak at Indiecon 2026 (Sep 4–6), one of Germany’s largest Independent Publishing Festivals. It is made possible by the generous support of our sponsors and the City of Hamburg. The grantees will be announced later in Spring.
Curatorial team
We want to thank the curational team for their incredible knowledge and for taking the time to review all entries.
