Workshop - Graphic Essays: How to Use Zines to Make Academic Theory More Accessible
Most people don't have time to read 500 pages of theory unless they are in the field of academia, but this theory has the potential to become much more accessible through zines and comics. In this workshop, I will discuss how to write graphic essays that effectively engage readers while communicating complex ideas formerly only found in prose. Using examples of various graphic essays and nonfiction comics, including some of my own work, I will explain the difference between a graphic memoir and a graphic essay, how to do justice to the original text while using the graphic narrative medium to its full potential, and the importance of making information accessible to everyone.
